Abbey Price- Sue Bradley: Knit Samples At Lee Mills

Tuesday 11th March visit to Lee Mills

During this visit to Lee Mills as a group we decided to each focus on our own interests in the archive.
For my interest I wanted to look at more experimental and patterned knits, Barbara selected several books for us to look through to do with what we were interested in. The book I found I was most interested in was Sue Bradleys book "Stitches In Time". Sue Bradley is a fashion/textile designer who specializes in the areas of print and knit. I found this related to me and my own interests because my specialist area is print.

In the book she talks about how her fashion designs were flat within print so she developed knit samples based upon her print work. Throughout the book there were images of her drawing and print work relating to her knit swatch samples. After seeing Sue's work in the book Barbara told me they had a collection of different knit samples by Sue Bradley that she donated to the archive. There were so many samples I spent a long time going through them. I found been able to look at the samples first hand gave me plenty of inspiration for the article as well as inspiration in my own work.

The samples were more abstract and bolder than I thought they'd be. Here are some of the photographs of the samples I thought stood out from the collection:

I thought this sample stood out from the collection because of the colours used and the type of yarns used. I think that these two contrasting colours work very successfully in this unusual pattern structure.

I found this chunky brightly coloured knit sample interesting in the collection because of how the white knit goes in to a range of brightly coloured colours. I think the colours make the design more exciting and the patterns in the structure of the knit more eye catching. Overall I've felt I've gained more inspiration and knowledge of the archives at Lee Mills in todays session I think this collection of Sue Bradley knits was a great start to my interests in the archive.
