World War I was a global war centered in Europe that began on 28 July 1914 and lasted until 11
November 1918.
The
United States declared war on Germany on April 6, 1917. Germany surrendered and
the war was over on November 11, 1918.
During the First World War, people of
all ages were asked to knit wool socks, sweaters and other garments to warm American
and British soldiers at home and abroad. Volunteers who were working were
producing almost all of this knitting for the American Red Cross. During this
war, more than 6,000 knitters had produced hundreds and thousands of knitted
items.
