For the home front of World War II,
knitting again would help the war and would most importantly keep the soldiers
warm. During this time a very popular and well known magazine called Life
created a cover story called ‘How To Knit.’ This article would of shown very
basic instructions and would also give you a pattern for example a simple
knitted vest. This particular article enlisted the phrase, “To the great
American question ‘What can I do to help the war effort?’ The public came up
with the most common answer that came to everyone’s mind, which was ‘Knit.’ This
article stated that more and more knitters were turning out garments for
soldiers even though machine knitting was proving to be more and more
efficient. Knitting became prosperity to the public as a way of helping the
war. During this time and 2 weeks later, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and
America entered World War II. After this catastrophic event, more and more
people were knitting socks. mufflers and sweaters to keep the soldiers
warm.
Before the Pearl Harbor disaster,
people were already knitting but were also preparing care packages of food and
clothing. “Bundles for Britain” to help besieged Londoners. And the numbers of
troops kept mounting up and became increasingly large in numbers since Germany
invaded Poland on September 1, 1939.
