Distortion

Another form of camouflage that the soldiers used and called was ‘Dazzle’ which would leave the subject visible but distorted by the appearance. It was mainly being used for ships during WW1 and it was the most public and visually striking form to the new art of camouflage.

Yvonne Gregory was a very famous photographer in her own right, who gained attention in the 20th Century but she was also married to Bertram Park who still to this day is one of the most successful society photographers to this day. This very striking image is of Gregory and was taken by her husband in 1919. The whole concept behind the photograph is the theme of wartime camouflage for the first post war ball with costumes inspired by Norman Wilkinson’s naval designs.
